Self Portraits (Day 1)

Project: self-portrait plaster casts

we started off with making our own bases by assembling two pieced of wood together.
looked something like this: _|_
we then made armatures using either scraps of paper or wire.

after all that prep-type work, we used Chavant Professional Plasteline clay to sculpt our faces.
that looked something like this:

workin'.

the eyes are probably the trickiest part, so they were saved for last.
the trick is to create an actual eye socket and place an eyeball inside as opposed to trying to carve in an eye.

the final step was to make shims out of aluminum cans.
they create a shelf dividing the two halves of our plaster casts.

Next week: plaster!!!!

p.s. class can be fun too!

look at all those smiles.

  2. Today in class we plastered out heads. This was my first time using plaster and it was a new experience for me. After learning how to create the plaster we began to apply it to one side of the head. We let a first coat dry and then applied a thinker second coat. The plaster began to dry and we reapplied more plaster if it was needed to the head. After it dried fully we carefully broke open the mold to reveal the outlines of our heads.
